White Gold.

I am upset by going through certain statistics as a result of globalisation and its impact upon developing countries. A designer brand would cost £5 in the country of manufacture and the selling price on UK high streets could come upto £50, which is obviously unacceptable. At least if it was a 50% share for the manufacturer, then I would have never thought of writing up this. Don’t you think this is unfair? Would you buy a designer wear, which embodies the pain and suffering of the vulnerable?

Labour organisations have found out that child labour is taking place in domestic and export industries. Majority of cotton pickers in Uzbekistan are children who leave school by the age of nine, their hands swollen with blisters as a result of long hours of working and also exposure to the pesticide sprayed on cotton plants. Factory workers in Bangladesh are the worst hit as a result of globalisation. They work a whopping 80hrs per week compared to the normal 40hrs shift. The emergency exists are locked once they enter the factory and made to toil long hours before they can go home. I would call this modern day slavery. If they happen to boycott/ strike for their basic employment rights, they are sacked or even sexually assaulted if it’s a woman. I just can’t believe we are still in the 21st century, on one side people are spending millions of dollars for a personal trip to space and on the other side people are struggling for their food and shelter. The contrast amazes me……what do I learn? What can I do?

Is this the collapse of globalisation? Ethical trading initiatives have to come across in full swing….fair trade policies have to be followed and therefore pave way towards a better living for the poor and less privileged. Government has to step in and protect their people by stressing on ethical trading policies.

I have never had a designer wear in my life and will never have I suppose! I believe in simple living. Would you think twice before you spend all that money on Lewi’s and Gap and all that crap? Where as if you spend less, you could give away whatever you have saved to charities. Please give it a try and we all have to stop being selfish!
